Professional experience

Dr. S. Berberoğlu is head of Remote Sensing and GIS department in Institute of Basic and Applied Sciences and a lecturer in Landscape Architecture. He has 21 years of broad-based field and laboratory environmental experience required in the application of environmental monitoring and management. Dr Berberoğlu is also involved in various national and international projects such as climate change, biodiversity mapping, change detection, hydrological modelling and biomass estimates. His current field of research is driving ecosystem models using geospatial technologies to understand impacts of climate change on ecosystem functions and conservation in the Mediterranean region. He has been modelling Net Primary Productivity (NPP), basin hydrology, erosion and land use/cover change. His major concern is transferring these modelling outcomes into the ecosystem based planning.

Dr. Berberoğlu is also the founder of the CU Landscape Architecture Remote Sensing and GIS Lab which is dedicated to providing innovative, state-of-the-art monitoring of environment using geospatial technologies (GIS, GPS and Remote Sensing).

Process-based models for climate impact attribution across sectors. EU-COST action CA19139. (2020-2023). MC Member.

The integration of climate impacts across different natural and societal sectors is only slowly emerging. Therefore, PROCLIAS aims to develop common protocols, harmonized datasets and a joint understanding of how to conduct cross-sectoral, multi-model climate impact studies at regional and global scales allowing for attribution of impacts of recent climatic changes and robust projections of future climate impacts.  The Action will do so by focusing on key interactions of climate impacts across sectors, their accumulated effect, especially of extreme events, the attribution of impacts to climate change and the quantification of uncertainties.

Büyükmenderes Havzasi Peyzaj Atlasi Projesi. Tarım ve Orman Bakanlığı Doğa Koruma ve Milli Parklar Genel Müdürlüğü (Finanse eden kuruluş) (2018-2021) Project Coordinator.

The purpose of landscape atlases is to understand structures and their changes and associated values. So, Büyükmenderes Landscape Atlas, an information tool aims i) to identify its own landscapes throughout its territory; ii) to analyse their characteristics and the forces and pressures transforming them including climate change; iii) to take note of changes; iv) to assess the landscapes taking into account the particular values assigned to them by the interested parties and the population concerned. The outcomes of the project will support physical planning by integrating nature based solutions.

A Framework for Resistant Cities: Green Infrastructure Based Adaptation Project Modeling, Mapping, Analysis and Training. İzmir Büyükşehir Belediyesi Sağlıklı Kentler ve Temiz Enerji Şube Müdürlüğü (Yürütücü Kurluş). Avrupa Birliği ve Türkiye Cumhuriyeti “Türkiye’de İklim Değişikliği Alanında Kapasite Geliştirme Hibe Programı”. (2018-2019) Project Coordinator.

Changes in climate can change the geographical distribution and quantity and quality of ecosystem services. In the project, changes in the land cover from past to present were mapped in the example of Balçova and future change was estimated. In this context, the green infrastructure has also been mapped. A model has been developed for adapting to the changing climatic conditions by combining the information derived from future climate scenarios.

Climate Change and Environmental Risk Analysis of Turkey. Funded by Intensified Cooperation (IntenC): Promotion of German (BMBF)- Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) a joint research project carried out in collaboration between Cukurova University (Turkey) and Johann Goethe University-Frankfurt (Germany). (2011 – 2014) Project Coordinator.

The aim of this research was to understand likely consequences of climate change on ecosystem changes and mechanisms of ecosystem functions and to model spatial distribution of major environmental risks (Erosion, Net Primary Productivity and Forest Fire) using spatial information technologies together with ground data in country scale. The future climate projections were based on a RCP (Representative Concentration Pathways) scenario that was defined in 5th Assessment Report of IPCC. These environmental variables were modelled using spatial information technologies for present and future. In country scale, it was estimated that Net Primary Productivity will increase by 0.048 Pg carbon and erosion will increase from 285,5 million to 323,5 million tons. The risk areas in Turkey were mapped and assessed on the basis of watersheds temporally and spatially.

Seyhan Havzası Su Yönetimi için Konumsal Bilgi Teknolojileri Tabanlı Karar Destek Sistemi Oluşturulması. TÜBİTAK-1003 (2016 – 2019) Project Coordinator

This study aimed to develop a decision support system for Seyhan River Basin in the frame of sustainable water use considering climate change impacts using spatial modelling land surveys and gauging stations data and remotely sensed data. This decision support system will enable determination of present situation and future likely environmental and socio-economic impacts on water resources for the sectors including agriculture, energy and environment.

Climate Change, Water and Productivity in the Mediterranean: Capacity Building for Geospatial Modelling. EU Fp7, International Research Staff Exchange Scheme (Marie Curie Actions, People.  (2008 – 2011) Project Coordinator.

The aim of this research was capacity building to estimate both hydrological and rates of biogeochemical cycling in order to test hypotheses on the relationship between climate change and ecosystem productivity in the Mediterranean environment. Remotely sensed-data, GIS and process-based simulation models have provided the capability to assess ecological change at broad spatio-temporal scales. The project pursues a clear application and enables to transfer expertise from science into practice and on the other hand the mutual exchange of knowledge between research groups from Turkey, Germany, England and US (Univ. of California, Univ. of Texas AM, and Unv. Of Wisconsin).
